[Worship] Learning keys and E/G#
Hey worship-addicts,
I'm a lurker that's "de-lurking". I've been playing guitar for seven years; took
a year-and-a-half of lessons, and I've been leading worship (mostly for
small groups) for 6 years. Anyway I finally feel like I can express myself
well on the instrument. Most of the tunes I lead are Vineyard material, along
with some PromiseKeepers material, and some songs written by my
home church. I want to learn keys. I've learned enough music theory to
be able to construct extended chords (e.g. I can tell you what a Eb9#11 is, but
it took thinking overnight about it to figure out what to do with it on guitar).
To learn keys, I need to get a keyboard, and I'm thinking of getting an electronic
synth (I live in an apt.), so that I can practice through headphones. Do you
folks suggest weighted-key or not? How many keys should I get (64, 76 or 88)?
SECOND thing I want to say: I know this was discussed early last week, but
while I was playing at home, I "came up" with a voicing for E/G# that actually
doesn't require a lot of work for the pinky. Guitar players, here we go....

This is borrowed from how jazz players comp their chords. You gotta mute the
A string as reach up the the G# on the E string with your middle finger. First
finger goes to the root on the D string, and the ring goes on the B note on the
G-string. Make sure you're intonation between the G and B strings is right or
else you'll sound bad. The ? note is a maj7, which works in the key of E and A,
and is optional. If leaving the B string open sounds too "droney", mute it too :).
This chord can be moved up the neck if you just claw the E,D and G strings, and
it can substitute for the relative minor (C#m) with the root left to the bass players.
