You've probably got the output from the tape deck routed through the
mixer to the main (for playback), right?  This feeds back into the input
of the tape deck when you record, producing - you guessed it -
feedback.  ;->  We've all done it.  Mute your playback channels on the
main console when you record and you should be alright.
