This is the classic mixing problem where the tape recorder sends the
recorded signal back through the tape outputs to monitor what you are
recording. If the mixer is set to play the tape through the system the
tape recorder causes a nasty feedback loop through the system during
record. The solution is to be sure the tape return to main mix or
channel for tape playback is deselected. This problem usually arises
when a tape is played before or during the service, the mixer levels are
still left up (even though the tape is stopped playing at the tape
player), and then you attempt to record anything later. The moment
record is pushed there is nasty feedback that can confound the novice
mixer. Most mixer manuals have a warning about this concerning tape
playback. BTW, I learned this one the hard way many years ago :-)
