Feedback is always very important for performers. The point of receiving
feedback should be to figure out what's wrong and how to improve. If the
sound cannot be improved, then it's time to figure out whether people really
belong in there or not, or whether the music is right or not.
In my experience as a choir director, I've have heard some pretty bad stuff
during rehearsals (and during performances, unfortunately sometimes). I have
NEVER heard anything that could not be and was in fact not improved by focusing
on the problems and doing it over and over again. A multitude of sins can
be corrected by rehearsing enough.
The talented people tend to pitch in and make it happen. The untalented people
tend to sing quietly or drop out. I have never kicked anyone out for not being
able to minister through voice and song.
But if someone is singing loudly off-key, I'll stop everything during rehearsal
and let them know what I hear. If it keeps happening, I'll ask them to sing
quieter.
We don't use microphones for the choir, but if we did, I'd make sure that I
could control the balance directly, or through the sound technician.
