I'm no soundman or expert, but I have been interested in getting into
home recording with a PC. Anyway, there are a good set of pages at
http://homerecording.miningco.com/ that deal with more than just the
hobbyist level of recording/sound systems.

For miking a piano see the following articles:

  http://homerecording.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa061097.htm
  http://homerecording.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa061797.htm

Other features (like what the aux sends do on the mixer, pre/post
sends, EQ, miking drums, etc):

Hope it helps,

P.S. Due to some previous (general) replies to my posts, I though I
     would just point out that Iain is spelt I - A - I - N
(It's the Scottish spelling, but I'm not Scottish. Or Canadian.)
