We've used it in the past and got the same bag of mixed results. It can
be a helpful tool though.
Be aware of where you get the feed that goes on the tape. If you're
going to use a recording for this purpose you need to make sure the sound
tech mixes for the tape feed, not what he or she is listening to in the
house. There can be a lot of difference between the two depending on how
much monitor sound spills back into the mics and/or how much spills into the
house. I have made recordings for this purpose that sounded like a good
blend of harmonies in the house but when you listen to the tape it seemed
like one of the harmony parts was blasting over everyone else.
I always say a disclaimer before I replay anything I've recorded that goes
something like; "Remember that what goes on the tape isn't necessarily the
same mix that the congregation hears in the house".
If you don't have the capability for some reason to listen and record the
mix going on the tape, the next suggestion would be setting up a small
portable tape recorder somewhere in the house. It won't be near the quality
but you would get the idea of what the house mix is.
