any... 'cauze the whole point of it is near the end.- It's too new, like an unknown language.
- It's not so melodious as the more established style.
- There are so many new songs that it is impossible to learn them all.
- This 'new music' creates disturbances and causes people
to act in an indecent and disorderly manner. - It places too much emphasis on instrumental music rather than on 'godly lyrics'
- The lyrics are often worldly, even blasphemous
- It is not needed, since preceding generations have gone to heaven without it.
- It is a contrivance to get money.
- It monopolizes the Christian's time and encourages them to stay out late.
- These new musicians are young upstarts, and some of them are lewd and loose persons.

10 reasons are from a prominent American clergyman from the
18th Century. His written statement is from 1723
and is directed against the use of hymns in the church! Today
there is a tendency to shun anything that is contemporary generally
because we don't like change. If this pastor's way of thinking had
won in his time, today we would be singing only metrical psalms.
THANK GOD wiser men prevailed or there would be no hymns (like Holy,
Holy, Holy), gospel songs (like Victory In Jesus), or even contemporary Christian
music (like David Ruis, Kevin Prosch, Deleriou5?) being played
in the church today. |
