[Worship] tracking ten reasons
someone posted 10 reasons and said...
>These 10 reasons are from a prominent American clergyman from the 18th =
>Century. His written statement is from 1723 and is directed against the =
>use of hymns in the church! Today there is a tendency to shun anything =
>that is contemporary generally because we don't like change.
I liked the irony and wonder whether anyone can be specific about the
source of this list of reasons. Who was the clergyman.
isn't it fascinating that there really isn't anything new under the sun? I
always thought that in my reading of church history that the esasiest
environment for change in worship styles is during a *new wine for new wine
skins* phase. the protestant reformation was accompanied by Luther's
Christianised bar songs, The Methodists introduced a whole range of hymns
embodying their theological concerns inspiring a revival in godliness, The
Salvation Army took contemporary music onto the streets. I often wonder to
myself if William Booth were a young man today whether he'd be rapping on
the streets or creating drum and bass worship albums borrowing music from
clubs. The last time this really happened was with the Jesus movement so i
wait to see what the next move of God will be that will release new worship
into the church.
I wonder about delirious? and Matt Redman because that seems to have a
fresh passion and emphasis but then over in britain I wonder about the
Worldwide Message Tribe and their dance music worship meetings that are
impacting thousands of kids in Manchester, England. Even as I wrote this
email I'm listening to a new album from a church in Leeds, England called
Revive which has a very clubby feel and moves from psalm like songs through
almost lamentations in places. Still trying to work out how I feel about
it!!
