Re: [Worship] Secular Music

Jonathan,

I hope this thread will go for a while, I think it would be interesting!
Here are my .02 worth!

>1) Should Christians listen to secular music?

I think that is a totally personal choice. Some Christians I know, have no
problem listening to most secular music. . . they are not however into death
metal. . . I know some who just won't go there. . . I have to be careful,
music is very, very important to me, and I have found that if I listen to
too much secular music, my focus gets off God to some extent. I believe
Satan uses secular music for his own purposes and we (Christians) should
basically "guard our hearts".

>2) Your thoughts on Christian artistes who go to the secular scenes.

I hope this question does not become a "let's get Amy Grant" kind of thing.
. .I used to feel that Christian musicians should stick to Christian music.
. . however, Christians in secular jobs do not seemingly always feel the
need to leave those jobs and enter a particular ministry. Christian
artists for the most part minister to those who already listen to their
music--we Christians. By going to the secular areas they can reach an
audience that needs ministering to! Just for interest sake, a couple of
years ago when almost all Christians were anti-Amy, and some churches here
in Canada even suggested that their youth burn her albums, she was at the
same time rated in the top 10 worst concerts in the secular realm. Why?
Because she still puts God first in everything she does. . .after leaving
her concerts, you know full well where she is coming from.

>3) Should we be talking in terms of Christianizing music, or that all
>music - whether secular or "Christian" - is for the glory of God? It seems
>that many think that listening to Christian music is spiritual, while
>listening to secular music is not!

I so often get "blessed" (I hate that word) from some ("some") secular
music, however, I can't sing a Christian song to my husband while driving in
the car and have the same fun as say, singing Savage Garden's "Truly, Madly,
Deeply", or Shania Twain's "You're Still the One". . . . ;-) I remember
always thinking that as a Christian singer, I should only sing Christian
songs. . . I was asked to sing at the wedding reception of a couple of
friends of mine. . .they did not want their ceremony to become a church
service, but rather wanted to celebrate their marriage. . . they asked me to
sing two secular songs, I was very nervous and not sure of the whole thing.
It gave me no greater joy when I sang than to see all the older people from
our church, holding hands, looking into each others eyes with love--that was
so exciting!

Sorry to have gone on. . . .love the subject!
