Correct however the 7 is not only implied it is required.

> Cmaj9 = C E G D      (the higher D REPLACES the higher C)

The chord as spelled above is a C(add9) not a CMaj9.
CMaj9 = (C E G B D or C D E G B).  CMaj9 is a CMaj7 chord with the 9 added.
 The 9 can basically go anywhere in the chord depending on how you want the
chord to sound. Any chord with a 9, 11 or 13 REQUIRES A 7 as the only
reason to call them such (instead of 2, 4 or 6), is the fact that the 7
makes them so.

> Cadd9 = C E G C D    (the high D is ADDED)

In this case the (add9) shows that the 7 is to not be included. It also
shows exactly where the "D" is to be placed (at the top of the chord not in
the middle) thus making it a add9 instead of an add2. The second root (C),
is also not required unless you wish for that certain texture.

It gets a little confusing doesn't it.
