[Worship] Church Music FAQs already exist
To: members of the Worship List and WorshipTalk
I did about 10-15 minutes of Internet searching today and came up
with several webpages that contain tons of information,
including existing FAQs about copyright information specific
to church music.
So, I quickly checked all of the 200 + messages that have appeared
on our discussion lists for the last 3 months and not a single
mention is made of any of these URLs or the associations that
sponsor them.
I belong to several professional lists for my job, and people
are constantly mentioning URLs on the lists with information that
is pertinent for what the list members so. So, why have I never
seen anything on either worship discussion list about the
Church Music Publishers Association or the Music
Publishers Association?
The existing FAQs contain information that I estimate
can easily answer 75+% of the questions that have appeared
in our discussion threads. Everyone just points to CCLI,
but these other associations work with CCLI to also
provide information to churches and musicians/composers.
So, I now ask these worship discussion list members
a couple of questions.
1. Are people out there on the lists withholding information on
these associations, and their websites, where answers can
be obtained with regard to nearly all of our questions?
I hope not, and shame on those persons who know the
information and do not share it. It just seems funny to me
that no one is aware of these associations, their websites,
and their valuable FAQs.
OR
2. Are we the 'blind leading the blind' and and no one is aware
of the wealth of information that exists out there?
If the latter question is true, then our Christian community has
a serious problem on how to adequately advertise important
information that is readily available, and which by the way is
FREE.
Maybe these associations and their web pages were mentioned
in messages posted before April 1998. But why didn't people
with the knowledge point the answer seekers to the web sites
during the recent discussion threads.
I was about to embark on a major project of heading a team in
developing a FAQ that treats all questions that have appeared on
these lists. Then, I talked with someone this morning who
mentioned that some FAQs seem to already exist (although no
one else has hinted at that). So I decided to spend 15-20 minutes
doing a little searching, and lo and behold, most of the all of your
questions are already answered in these existing FAQS that
cover many aspects of copyrighting, copying, and even "fair use".
The Christian Music FAQ team will be reviewing these existing
documents over the next week to decide if and how we should
proceed with developing a supplementary FAQ, a web site
with all appropriate links, and other information.
It is certain that we can start working on the advertising aspects
of the project in the very near future.
In the meantime, I encourage everyone to go take a look
at the web pages that are mentioned below.
