Actually compression has many uses. Right off the top of my head ...
adding sustain to a guitar, taming that speaker / singer who either
won't maintain a constant distance from the mike, looks back and forth
as they speak, or vary from whisper to shout in the span of a sentence.
They are also add presence to the  bass guitar, snap to drums and other
percussion, tame most anything with a wide dynamic range. You can side
chain one with a parametric equalizer to rig up a de-esser.
