Re: [Worship] Re: Worship leaders worshiping
An interesting theory--and I appreciate the reminder of the
importance of Jacob/Israel's wrestling with God -- but I'm not too sure
that either the original verse in Genesis 47 or the quote in Hebrews 11
includes anything to suggest his injury from that occasion was the reason
for 'leaning on his staff' (or "on his bed" if we follow the traditional
Hebrew reading --just a difference in vowels). Do you see something
in these texts that I'm missing? Isn't it enough that he was a very old
man about to die (in which case perhaps the point is more that Jacob
worshiped to the end the God who had seen him through to the end)?

Ben Blankinship <BBlankin@exch.co.albemarle.va.us>writes:
. . . "By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each
>of Joseph's sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff." Heb.
>11:21, NIV 8
>Extra credit: why did Jacob need to lean on a staff? Why is that posture
>important to the author of Hebrews?
. . .
>Jacob leaned on his staff because of the wound inflicted when he "wrestled
>with a man" (Gen 32:24-30). Perhaps the author is reminding us that the
>heart of Jacob's worship was in his recognition of God's power over him. On
>the one hand he knew he could not prevail, but on the other, he would not
>let go until God blessed him.
