I read this website with interest and found that all the evidence presented was
negative i.e. "we have no evidence that...". While I don't particularly have an
axe to grind with this particular "urban legend" the one about the candy cane
bugged me. Although its unlikely that a particular candy inventor in Indiana (or
whatever) invented the candy cane with all its symbolism, the facts mentioned in
the "exposee" on the candy cane legend were enough to make in obvious that in
the evolution of the candy cane, much if not all of the symbolism was
deliberately put there. The fact that "we have no evidence that" the red stripes
originally symbolized the blood of Christ isn't a problem for me because "we
have no evidence that" it didn't.
What bothers me is the ease with which people argue from silence and the fact
that we are so hungry to pounce on so called "urban legends".
One explanation of how the "12 days of Christmas" legend MAY have come about (as
Bruce described the material on the urban legend website) does not have any more
credibility than another. Until we know the truth why not pass on the one with
the cool symbolism (of course with the explanation "one theory is").
