Re: [Worship] Guitar Players: efx or no efx?
Ryan, you asked about guitar effects...
Here's da scoop...
When I play guitar at church (which is not very often these days), I play my
acoustic. (Electric guitars and me don't get along very well--I can't play
them!) I like to use at a minimum a chorus pedal and I sometimes add a delay
pedal. I run straight into a direct box which runs into the board. I use a
Dean Markley Pro Mag pickup and am very pleased with the sound. (I usually
get compliments.) I also use a Rockman acoustic guitar pedal to boost the
signal of the pickup and round out the tone. The Rockman pedal is actually
designed to make an electric guitar sound like an acoustic guitar, but I
really like the way it makes my pickup sound.
My son plays both acoustic and electric (no, not at the same time). When he
plays acoustic, he usually just uses a chorus pedal and like me, sometimes
adds a delay pedal. When he plays electric, he usually uses a chorus pedal
and an Ibenez Tube Screamer. He was using an amp that was run into a direct
box or miked, but I think lately he might be plugging directly into the
direct box (sans amp).
Our other electric guitar players plug into amps. One uses a ME-30 (Boss? or
Roland?) effects processor and plugs into a Pignose "Hog" amp that is miked.
The other fellow uses some pedals (I think he has a tremolo pedal, a
distortion pedal, and a wah-wah). He just got a new Mesa Boogie amp that
he's been using, so I don't if he still uses the distortion pedal or not.
Our other acoustic guitar player uses his Pignose amp for his personal
monitor which is plugged into a direct box. I think he uses an acoustic
guitar effects processor (not sure what kind).
All of these folks don't play every Sunday/Wednesday. We rotate people. Most
of us are on for 3 weeks and off one week per month.
The effects are run straight into the amps or direct boxes. I think that
effects are essential when playing through a sound system. We use the
effects very tastefully to enhance the sound. We don't use an effect simply
to have an effect.
