Re: [Worship] vocal leaders
Hi Kathy and list members!
>Hi, I was wondering if there are any worship leader's on the group >who
>are just vocalist or just play one instrument, say keyboard or >piano?
I only play the piano. I don't know too much about other instruments (I
only know how to play three guitar chords-still learning- and a smatter of
notes on the flute). But, as other listers have mentioned, it is good to
know what other musicians are doing. After reading through most of the
posts from a while back, I finally realized that a 'capo' was that thing you
latch onto the fingerboard of a guitar to change keys, i.e., to F...so
THANKS to all those guitarists out there!
>My question is how do you direct the other's on the worship team with
>instruments you don't know how to play yourself, say drums etc.
Sometimes I'll start a song and my worship leader (who's the guitarist)
will come in later. I can direct the guitarist, like how to play a certain
song. Since I can't play the guitar, I have to tap out the beat. Other
than that, I'm the 'filler'.
>Also do you assign the vocalists harmony parts or do you just let >them do

My worship leader usually assigns the harmony parts. Or sometimes one of
us sings the harmony on the fly during practice. We do a bit of improv as
we go along. When we practice, we figure out how we want to do each song
and the order of the songs.
>Do most of you play by chord lead sheets or do you have your team >play by
>ear.
I can play by ear, after listening to a song at least ten times! Most of
us on the WT's play by lead sheets. I do, anyway, which freak people out
because it's like, there are no notes. Lead sheets are helpful because w/o
the notes there are no distractions, and they allow me to improvise a lot
more.

Amen. I started out as a worship team pianist when I was 12, and I've
been doing it for 5 years. I've practiced and practiced and learned how to
improvise on my own. I would really love to have a guidebook. My worship
leader, other worship leaders, and friends on other worship teams have been
my mentors and advisors. So, if ANYONE knows of ANY books that can answer
Kathy's questions, LET ME KNOW!!
In Him,
Georgia
