RE: [Worship] prayer request
I lead in various places, many of them very free flowing. I would still go
to your song list prayerfully, and ask God what stand out. I bring song
sheets for the band (using worship assistant - thanks Bruce), and overheads
for the ones that stood out in the same order as the song sheet. I also
bring my book with all of the songs / lead sheets, and the full complement
of overheads in a binder. This way we can do anything we want, but have some
sort of idea of where to start.
The last time GT did worship for a Sunday morning (last week), I had about
20 songs picked out. I ended up using about half, and the overheads were
already pulled, and I made a song sheet for the team. Everybody does it
different, but Isaiah was in the Spirit, and heard about stuff way ahead of
time! I figure we can too...
I keep it pretty loose, and I know that my own ideas come into play, so it's
always open for change by the Lord, but still I try and get a sense of what
may be happening and where Father would like to take it. He may even have a
song for me to write down that applies. Sometimes (for me once or twice)
those songs come spontaneously, but most often, I get them ahead of time.
Plus, if they aren't "stuck" in their "freedom" (I have seen some of this
now, but I won't get into it), they might really like to have something
different which you can bring. The worship time I referred to above was at a
very free church that probably normally does no hymns, and I brought mostly
hymns last week. We were playing them as a 5 piece -- guitar / harmonica /
drums / bass / vocals / percussion group, and it made them maybe a bit more
accessible. (Ever try "Leaning on The Everlasting Arms" as a roots / folk /
gospel or "Glory To His Name" as a shuffle / folky piece?). Of course, there
is also the risk of "ruining" someone's favorite hymn by re-voicing or
arranging it (I heard this complaint once or twice).
In the end we're ministering to God (or we're supposed to be). I think He
likes change -- permutations and combinations of stuff -- I love the stuff
He does with trees and clouds and mountains (even weather)!
Anyway, that's my two cents. Be who you are made to be, and be obedient. I
will pray.
Kind regards,
Robb Sadler
