Phil,

I play an Alvarez twelve-string (I forget which model....).  Last year I 
had a Fishman Prefix preamp system put in it, which I just love.  The 
control and flexibility are great. It sounds like you don't really care for 
Fishman stuff, but I suggest trying a Prefix they are quite nice.

I used to use a Lawrence clip-in humbucker which was good too, until the 
cord died on it. :)  That's when I decided to go to a dedicated on-board 
system.
