Gordo,
I play a $3500(USD) custom bass. My back up instrument is a Squire "Pro
tone". If I were you I would try to play one of these before you buy the
Ibanez or Yamaha. In any case there are many nice playing and sounding
basses in the price range you are looking. Since you asked about Yamaha and
Ibanez I'll go ahead and vote for the Yamaha because its much easier to
play.
