(Worship List - this was a reply to a post on "WorshipTalk", but I
thought the whole thread was pretty interesting - about overcoming our
"talent", and thought I'd share my reply with Praise.net Worship List
and Heart of Worship List!)
Greetings!
Interesting thread. I've been playing piano since I was a toddler.
I've been blessed to have a gift and talent to play, and enhanced the
gift with years of professional study.
Lately, I've been frustrated because I felt I had no creative ideas. I
no longer wanted to just sit and play because it all just kept sounding
the same.
As I began to seek the Lord, I told Him that He was the Creator, and I'd
like Him to impart some more "creativity" into me!
I've begun to play more, and I would sense myself being "led" to play
certain notes, but because those notes did *NOT* fit into the "key"
musically, my "talent" and "training" would take over in my mind, and
I'd quickly move my hands and play the "expected" notes.
No wonder it all starts sounding the same. I decided to just play what
I felt led to play, and go with it. For a while, it sounded like some
pitiful melodies and harmonies - it sounded like I was just hitting all
the wrong notes. . .and eventually, it began to develop into something
more beautiful and more creative (as far as unique chords, sounds, and
modulations, etc) that I'm accustomed to!
So - I think our talent/training *CAN* get in the way of true
creativity! Try it!
Blessings,
Fred F. McKinnon, HighestPraise.Com
