[Worship] MUST READ URGENT MESSAGE TO LISTERS

Dear Friends,

PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS MESSAGE CAREFULLY. EVEN IF YOU'RE "NOT THE ONE",
YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS.

This is NOT a panic attack, but there is some measure for concern to
some of our members. At least one, maybe as many as four or five of you,
have a virus! Well, a Trojan-worm/virus combination, actually. Sorry but
it's true. We've been getting 4-10 messages a day for the last couple of
weeks that are trying to pass on the virus/worm. I know this drill all
too well because I know the symptoms all too well. My PC is also
infected. I write this from my virus free Mac.

This is a NASTY bug that affects Word 95 files and some other files. The
name of the worm is W95.MTX. You can very easily find out if "you're the
one" by going to your Windows directory and looking for a file named
"Mtx_.Exe". If this is in  your Win directory, you're infected.

This is difficult and time consuming to remove and will cause damage,
some irreparable, to executable files in your Windows and other
directories. It is considered by Norton to be one of the most dangerous
threats in cyberspace. Does that get your attention??

The good news is that you cannot get this bug by simply reading email.
HOWEVER, if you open an infected attachment for Word, you might get it
anyhow! This is why we do not allow attachments on this list. That is
why you will not get infected by any email from this list. Does that
help you relax?? At least about the list mail you get.

your browser crashes every time you try to read it, you're probably
infected as the virus prevents access to known anti-viral sites.

If you're infected, you got that way because you tried to open an
attachment from someone or even a Word document from a friend. I got
infected helping a friend with her itinerary. Found out days later that
the author of the itinerary was infected. Nice Christmas present, huh??

If you're infected, every time you send an email, the computer sends
another one to the same address, each with an attachment. Some have
legit names like archived-files.zip or blink_182.mp3.pif. Some of the
names are not polite, some of the messages are sent with blank messages
but with a file. One has to do with an x-rated version of Snow White and
the 6 Dwarfs. You get the picture.

If you're infected, GET HELP!! We don't normally send these warnings out
but because there are more than a couple of folks on list who are
sending to US, they are very likely sending to other list members as CC
posts. BE CAREFUL FOLKS!! GET YOUR ANTI-VIRAL PROGRAMS UPDATED!! This
worm corrupts files beyond recoverability and it spreads like wildfire
through your computer and through your email to others. You CAN fix it
yourself if you're really good with software and comfortable doing some
difficult adjustments like fixing your Windows Registry. Mess it up and
you start all over, though, like from formatting your hard drive. Very,
very nasty bug. Some companies will charge you about $100 to get rid of
this thing because it is so time consuming and fussy. Makes McAfee at
$40 a bargain, doesn't it?
