Lori,

No, actually Jon was right  --the copyright lasts for *50* years after the
death of the author (or the last surviving author if it is co-authored) for
works created after January 1, 1978.  For anonymous or pseudonymous works,
or works created for hire the copyright lasts for 75 years from the date of
its first publication or 100 years from its creation, whichever comes first.
(I believe it used to be that all copyrights lasted for 75 years from
creation, regardless of when someone died.  You also used to be able to
renew copyrights within a certain period --but no longer.)
