Re: [Worship] ever objected to a song PL wanted to do
I haven't seen much of this issue in the churches that I have served in,
however there was one incident that you may find useful information in. I
went back to my "home" church for a season, where I used to serve as worship
leader. Another member of the team had stepped up to the leader position.
The pastor, who is also a musician and worshiper and a wise leader, wanted
to raise up a second worship team and asked me to participate and lead this
group at an evening service. I chose a few songs, and led worship that
evening. Among the songs I sang was Vineyard's "Another Drink." Overall, the
service felt a bit awkward but I felt that God blessed our worship.
Much later, I found out that the main worship leader was deeply offended.
They had discussed doing this song, and the Pastor questioned one of the
lyric lines. He chose to use the song anyway, and change the line. He
neglected to tell me about this, so I did the song with lyrics verbatim,
which I had provided the overhead for also. The worship leader who was
offended repented of his reaction, I never knew about it till much later.
I am in agreement with others here that the church Pastor(s) should have
the final word on approving or disapproving songs. In my situation, I was
unaware of any conflict until after it was resolved. And overall I don't
remember any other disagreement as to lyric integrity. I have however heard
a great deal of discussion about not liking the musical style of a song,
whether a song was a "fit" to the congregation, or even question if the
"anointing" had left a song (meaning a particular song for a particular
congregation, not the song in itself). I relate this story, as I haven't
seen anyone else mention the option of choosing to change a questionable
lyric rather than eliminating a song entirely.
