Hi Bruce & list,
One thing to keep in mind when you're choosing (or retiring) songs is that,
chances are, your worship team WILL experience some turnover on occasion. Your
lead guitar may take a job in another city, leaving just the keyboard. Or you
may get a second drummer. You want a song repertoire that's partly balanced,
and partly plays on your worship team's strengths--both instrumental and
personality strengths. But it's also good to look ahead to how God might shape
your team in the future. Just because a song isn't optimal for your team and/or
setting NOW doesn't mean that won't change in the future.
For example, right now I'm looking at a lot of songs that are heavy on drums,
just in case our lead guitar can't make it one week. I don't know what it is
about me, but for some weird reason I attract drummers like crazy. I can't find
a strong keyboardist for the life of me, but I can get 4 drummers without
trying. :) But at the same time I can't rule out that God might send a
classical pianist--which pretty much chunks the whole drum idea.
Also, I think reserving any significant repertoire changes for when you do
experience turnover is a good idea. Because if you don't, you'll very likely
change things, and then when your team makeup changes you suddenly find yourself
changing again anyway. Unless the Spirit specifically leads you in some
direction, you just don't know what's going to happen.
in Christ,
