Re: [Worship] the cup of the new covenant...& marriage?

Jan,

Years ago I did some research on The Lord's Supper, and I agree with Bruce
that it was based on the Passover Meal, and that's where any symbolism
should come from. It is interesting from a worship standpoint that two of
the four cups of the Passover meal were Cups of Praise which included
singing some of the psalms! Here is the breakdown of the cups of the
Passover meal and the probable tie in with The Last Supper:

1st Cup - Announcing the Feast, this is the cup of Luke 22:17
2nd Cup - Cup of Praise, Psalms 113 - 114 sung
3rd Cup - Cup of Thanksgiving, this is the communion cup of Luke 22:20
4th Cup - Cup of Praise, Psalms 115 - 118 sung

It is also interesting to note the appropriateness of the Cup of
Thanksgiving to the new covenant. It was at this time in the meal that the
participants were to thank God for his deliverance from the bondage of
Egypt. They were to remember the blood on the doorposts which caused God to
keep them from death, and how the Lord's mercy was great to them. As we
partake of the cup of communion, we need to also be thankful - because we
have been delivered from the bondage of sin, and Christ's blood has caused
God to keep us from death, and the Lord's mercy is great toward us.
