Re: [Worship] What do you look for in a song?

When I look for a song..or when I write one I think
about the ease of playing and singing it..Will I have
to keep my eyes on the words and "read" them as I
sing? Or can I just close my eyes and enter in...Wordy
songs are good to listen to but if I am focused on the
overhead instead of God it has defeated my purpose of
being there.I also check out the words..do they talk
directly to God? This is important when we get into
the worship phase of our set. I like songs that are
directly pointed to God..not about God. ex. "You are
my hiding place"..instead of "He is a hiding place."
This makes the song more intimate. I like songs that
build in intensity as well. they take you
somewhere...you are in a different place when you have
finished the song than when you started it. Right now
the Lord has our congregation focusing on His
Holiness.. so I look for songs with this theme.Praise
songs do not have to be directly pointed at God..they
can be about his attributes as well. When I decide on
a set of songs I ask myself if they go together...am I
focusing the congregation in one direction or am I all
over the map. I try not to focus too much on
ourselves..the fill me up songs unless I am sure that
God wants us doing that. I save those songs for times
of ministry. So in answer to your question..in a
nutshell...make them easy to sing and pointed to God.
BTW I listened to your song.."OH, To Know You in Your
Glory".. excellent song..it floored me...I would like
to use this song sometime..but I am new at leading and
I don't understand all the copyright stuff..What do I
need to do in order to use this song?~Kathleen
