Re: [Worship] heart for worship, but not a lot of skill...

Hi Kevin,

You got a really good response from Jerry H. I have only a couple of small
tweaks or additions.

Private lessons! This is kind of like "working with" someone, but when they are
paying for it, there is an additional accountability that comes into play.

"Anything to get him practice and allow him to serve." AMEN, but not LEADING
just yet, IMHO. Part of the practice needed is becoming a team player, not a
leader.

I also like to put such folks on the front row playing along. Up front, but not
QUITE up front, y'know? Works easily for everything except keyboards. That's a
different deal altogether. Keys players really need to have some basic skills
before being plugged in as the "fills and frills" player. Skills include some
basic transposition skills.

Small groups, house church, cell groups, children's church, seniors gatherings,
etc., are all good experience for learning the songs and learning team play.

Jerry's implication of honesty in this whole thing is a great refreshment. Add
that to one of the normal ways of doing business "in the world" and you get what
can be called a "Individual's Development Plan". WRITE IT DOWN!! Targets like
number of chords, smoothness of changes, sample progressions, number of songs to
be learned per week/month. Means of achieving, like private lessons, individual
practice time (hours per day spelled out), suggestions for assignments (seniors
group each month, front row school, etc.). Because it is INDIVIDUALIZED, it's
not canned! You can write in anything you feel led of the Lord to put down.
Creativity at its finest along with the practical wisdom you've received and
earned. Then review it monthly or every 6 weeks for 3-6 months. Then reevaluate.
Nice thing about it is that you get targets but are not tied to the schedule. If
the person progresses quickly, tear up the plan and rewrite it! Love that paper!

Blessings!
