[Worship] youth leading worship
I post this message before unsubscribing.
I have had enough of the egos on this list. We, as worship leaders, are
only people stumbling down this spiritual journey like all the people we are
"leading." None of us are "worthy" of this responsibility. Last I heard,
we are all living under grace. How are youth going to learn to do this for
themselves if we never offer the opportunity? They are the future of our
church! If there is a person on this list who would be interested in
checking his or her ego at the door, feel free to correspond with me. The
posts I've seen reflect specific unChristlike attitudes, such as not letting
the little children come unto Jesus??????
Goodbye,

Hi Guys ~
Today I am sending out a flyer to ages 14-24 to gather them together to
do a few Christmas Contemporary numbers for our 5pm Christmas Eve service.
I could have anywhere from ten-250 teens invovled; more likely, I fear, the
10-side of things.
ANY suggestions on WHAT to teach them? I'm thinking Christmasy-themes;
but not necessarily. Some would need to be; but I have a hard time finding
Christmas songs that are also vertical in nature. Ideas?

oh boy - I'm in trouble here...
OK - over and over, we have threads on this list about how the worship
leaders must be spiritually qualified to lead worship - we expound how
musical skill and talent are nice, but it is the attitude, heart condition,
spiritual maturity, ability to work well with others, etc.etc.etc. that
must be present for an effective worship leader. Then, we turn around and
say, "Let's let the kids lead worship", the same ones who sit there and
complain that things are boring, the same ones who are still in chaos and
confusion (as we all are at those ages), the same ones who are giddy and
giggling through the service on sunday, the same ones who play Sony
Playstation for 3 hours a day, the same ones who we are working on
"developing"....
anyone see the problem? Now, I agree - there are some kids who are very
spiritually mature....there are some kids who are musically capable - there
are very few who have both....
I hope we (as a body of believers) are not waiving the requirements for
leading worship in an effort to involve the youth on sunday morning??
What's good for the adult leaders is good for the youth.....
I've seen it in our church - the youth are up there - and while some do a
great job, some are self-conscious, and look like they'd rather be anywhere
else in the world than up on that platform. That's not good for anyone.....
by the way, none of this applies to the occassional youth choir (little
kids) singing their songs - cute as can be....I'm talking about the
middle/high school ages...
How about, the worship leaders make the worship more youth oriented? Play
the rockin' music - get in touch with what the music is like at the youth
conferences - get out the electric guitar and the drums (and then hope the
older people don't complain like the kids do during hymns - hehe) and paint
in their colors.
You may fire when ready,
Earl

My printer is fired up! When I saw Charity's post on children in
worship, it reminded me of an article in WL! Wasn't there an article in
WL about children in worship? Was it any good?

Lynn,
I would ask him (or her) what he thinks *your* job description should be and
how it would change under him? What has his relationship been with past
WL's and does he plan to continue to operate like this? Ask what his
philosophy of worship is. For example, how important is worship to him? If
you’re having a baptism, etc., and the worship has to be cut back to
accommodate the time, will he also cut back on the sermon by the same amount
of time? Whether you think he should or not, these are the kinds of
questions it is good to address up front.
If you plan any changes in musical direction, will he defend them or will
you be starting out on opposite sides of the issue? Does he think you’re
too contemporary or too traditional? How important does he think his
opinion of these issues is? That is, does he have a vision, and is there
room in that vision for any vision you have?
How much input into the worship does he want to have? Does he ever want to
pick the songs? Suggest songs? What kinds of songs would he suggest? Does
he care how many hymns you do? How much input does he want to have on
questions of style, instrumentation and lyric content of the worship music?
Who does he think is responsible for special music, drama, offertories, etc?
When does he expect instrumental music to be played during the service?
Does he require instrumentalists to improvise at times (say during ministry
times)? Does he ever use music to cover an awkward transition or fill
space?
What is his attitude if you add/delete the following: choir, instruments,
drums, banners, dancers, singers, etc? That is, if you have a choir and you
decide it's time to stop, or if you don't have a choir and it's time to
start one, what will his attitude be? What will happen to the time the
choir takes (or used to take)? If you want to add an electric guitar
player, what does he think about that?
If people start criticizing the worship team or others in ministry, what
will he do? Is he willing to spend his “political capital” to protect the
others under him, or will he hang them out to dry? Will he stifle minor
criticism by lovingly reminding others that you are doing your job as best
you know how—and not let things fester by appeasing divisive people? Will
he let you deal with such people and back you up, and mediate if you want
him to?
Will he hold you accountable to be morally upright and release you to use
your gifts without watching over your shoulder? Will he provide spiritual
direction and guidance for you? What is his attitude toward any "perks" you
or any on the WT receive (time off, payment, going to conferences, etc.)?
When you each speak about the direction that the worship program will take,
will you speak with one voice? And if you do, will you have to echo his
vision of worship or will you have input so that you develop a common vision
of what worship should be at your church?
Does he understand how you and your former pastor related and what changes
you would like in a new relationship? Explain to him how much close
contact, cooperation, mentoring, freedom, encouragement, responsibility and
authority you need from him. Then ask him to sum it all back up so that you
know he heard you.
What kinds of responses does he like to see in worshipers and what is his
attitude toward any unusual manifestations of the Holy Spirit? What
constitutes "unusual" in his mind? What kinds of behavior in worshipers
would he discourage or forbid? What is his attitude toward the gifts of the
Holy Spirit and their use in worship services?
What does he feel are the strengths and weaknesses of your WT and your
particular ministry? How does he plan to help you overcome your weaknesses,
if at all, and how does he plan to use your strengths? Does he feel he has
something to teach you? Does he feel there is something he needs to learn
from you?
Well, if you have time to ask all of these, everybody else will probably be
sorry they didn't get enough time, but these can help you decide which ones
are the most important questions. Then you can be sure to get answers to
those, at least.

Hi, Earl,
I'm glad you jumped right in there with both feet!
I hear you loudly and clearly! We faced the same thoughts when recruiting
youth for our team. If they are agreeing to our covenant, then, they must
be doing their best to live spirit filled lives, knowing that to be part of
the Worship Team is a ministry.
So far, we have a two high school seniors and three juniors; guitarist,
vocalists, computer tech. and sound tech.
Before they "formally" joined the team, we presented the covenant to them,
asking them to prayerfully consider the commitment they would be making.
We can only pray that these young people will be a testimony to others in
their peer group.
Of course, there is the other side of the coin. Could we allow young people
into the team who do "need" the comfort and strength that comes from the
other committed people? Perhaps, they can fill roles that aren't exactly
"leadership". I realize this will depend upon each persons' definition of
leadership. I make that statement with the definition that they will not be
leading prayer, giving testimonies, or reading scriptures. But, they would
still be participating with the prayer that the seed is planted and that God
will nourish it.
So far, so good for our youth.
It is exciting to watch them grow in their faith and commitment.
Blessings, Sue

I'm holding a virtual olive branch. You have a point! The adults
complain about the style, JUST like the children! Hummmmm..... Now,
I've been in the position of experiencing both! Everyone? Your thoughts?

Hey Ya'll -
This may have been covered already (I've got several Worship Digests piled
up
to scan in my Inbox!), but I just wanted to make contact regarding our
overheads.
We try to always put the Title and Author at the top of the overhead, and
then
the copyright information on the bottom . . .
i.e.
This is The Song Title
Words and music by: Author's Name
LYRICS
Copyright (yada, yada, yada)
Used with permission. CCLI License # xxxxxx
That's our format for both PowerPoint slides and overhead masters.
Blessings,

Worshipers -
Just wanted to announce the launch of a new MP3/Music site called
"Mizmor.Com" which is at http://www.mizmor.com. I have no affilliation
with the site, or its owners, other than that I've uploaded some of our
songs there as an "indie artist". I found out about it when I got an
email a few weeks ago from them, asking us to consider uploading some of
our music during their "pre-registration". If they can handle the job,
I'd lots rather use them than mp3.com to stream our mp3 files, since
it's a Christian site.
It just launched today, and from what I can tell, they are sort of like
the "christian" version of mp3.com. If they get all the kinks worked
out, it could be a GREAT place to find good christian music.
They even have a "who is Jesus" link.
My page is at http://www.mizmor.com/highestpraise
For those of you who are on mp3.com, you may want to take a look at it.
They have given me a referral code to put in any links I give (for
whatever reason, I'm not sure, honestly), and it's 100055.
Blessings!
