For what's it's worth, the biggest problem I had when I started, and the
same one I've seen in many others who start to lead worship, is that of
being afraid to LEAD.
I had musicians on my team who were better than me, some of whom had lead
worship before, so I shrank back and let them take over. Problem was, I had
4 different people trying to lead it their way. Each had a different style,
a different musical preference. We were so incredibly scattered it was
ridiculous. There are merits to every kind of worship music and style of
worship out there. But in the few minutes you have on Sunday morning with
your congregation, there's no way you can do them all, and do them all well.
Also, I was so nervous, I was afraid to make eye contact with the
congregation, so I wasn't really leading worship as much as "song leading."
That doesn't mean you have to "rule with an iron fist." But do LEAD. With
your pastor's direction, YOU make the decisions that need to be made. (What
is our style? Which songs will we use? Etc.) Sure, take input from your
team, but just make sure you set the tone, and you do the leading. It will
save you much grief in the long run.
