Good point here... strings make a HUGE difference in bass sound. Bass
strings tend to get all crudded up with dirt and oil, and lose their
resiliancy. Here is a tip from on old bass guy on a limited budget. Since
stings are pretty expensive to replace, boil them once a week. That's right,
boil them. Take them off the instrument, put them in a pan of water, put it
on the stove, boil them for 5 minutes or so. When you put them back on the
instrument, they will sound like brand new. It also preserves the life of
the string, since the oil and gook eventually wears out the core of the
string. I've heard legends of a studio bass player who used the same strings
for 10 years or so because he boiled them once a week.
