We're just stepping out in this, too. Other than brief periods of what
we call "open worship" we generally have not incorporated a lot of time
that's as unstructured as what you've described. What we're doing now is
incorporating some of the House of Prayer approaches. Right now we're
using scripture, then singing it antiphonal, accompanied with
instrumentation, then just dwelling there for a while. Then we can go
back to the next part of the scripture and move on. We're doing it as a
team, and will begin to incorporate it more with the congregation as we
become more comfortable with this expression. You probably won't see us
building an entire set for the congregation this way, though my personal
worship times are mainly what you've described - grab an instrument and go.
There's a lot to be said for spontaneous expressions of worship, though
spontaneous does not equal anointed. My personal preference is to start
with a flexible structure to provide a framework for creativity.
