Re: [Worship] putting songs in singable keys
Some songs are great, worship-ful songs, but are just
not suitable for congregational singing. Doesn't mean
there's anything wrong with the song - I would just
use those for special music instead of putting them
into the worship set... but there are always
exceptions.
A song like Shout to the Lord is worth the trouble to
the congregation to work a little harder to sing it.
It is a great song, and it opens people's hearts to
express great things. Worthy is the Lamb (Hillsongs)
is another one. But when I put one of those songs into
a set, I try to make the rest of the songs easier on
people and build up to it. You don't want to wear
people out!
I love God of Wonders and sing it at home all the
time, but I still think it's too difficult to use for
corporate worship. I know some of you use it, and
apparently very successfully, but maybe the difference
is that I'm used to working in a seeker sensitive
atmosphere and one of my goals is for people to be
able to sing along as quickly as possible, or at least
reasonable. They used it at a church I visited a few
weeks ago, and I couldn't figure out what to sing or
where, and I know the song. Apparently I wasn't the
only one, because virtually no one else was singing
either. I had to wonder what a visitor who had never
heard the song before might be thinking...
