[Worship] Re: Priest and "bells" concept?
Fred,
I can imagine someone suggesting that the legend of the rope might
in fact be true, even though unattested in all ancient sources
(though I wouldn't recommend that line of reasoning). But the
problem is not simply lack of attestation.
I tried to suggest the problem by pointing out that the bells that
Exodus points us NOT to the people outside needing to hear, but
toward God.
But there is a much larger problem with such a 'theory' --pointed out
in the link I referred you to. The garment that had BELLS on it
(the ephod) was NOT worn when the high priest entered the Most Holy
Place on the Day of Atonement (at which point he put on simple
linen), but for his duties in the courtyard and the Holy Place (see
Lev 16:3-4, 23-24).
This answers the usual form of the legend/myth, which tie it to the
high priest's annual visit to the Most Holy Place on the Day of
Atonement. I noticed that you only mention the "Holy Place" (though
I'm not certain that's what you intended). But that idea doesn't fit
the theory very well anyway, since the OTHER priests had access to
the Holy Place and could have gone in and retrieve the high priest,
should anything happen to him there. There would be NO NEED of a
rope!
