When you read her letter, did you get the feeling that she was really
open to changing her views if you can make a convincing enough argument?

She's not arguing about rules. Your pianist has a foundational value
that goes deeper than a branch of music theory. 

Rather than try to present her with an overwhelming argument, deal with
her on a values level.
