The crazy thing is that even some of the original scores are not
accurate to the performance - Beethoven was known for a lot of
improvisation, for example.
Giving a particular score the stature of holy writ is presumptuous.
Even interpretations of a particular piece by its creator usually change
over time. Which one is the "correct" version?
Music is like language - if it doesn't change with time, it dies.
And, like language, there are always those who try to hold on to the
"way it was" as the only way, or (the opposite extreme) artificially
alter it and try to make those alterations standard like Noah Webster
successfully did with American English and current attempts at inclusive
language.
I prefer this simplified rule when it comes to music: If it works, it's
good. If it doesn't work, it's bad. The rules are foundational - they
establish a framework from which to be creative.
