It's been a while since my music history classes, but as I recall from some research I did for a term paper, it should not be too surprising that church chant resembles the music of the Second Temple. After all, church music almost certainly grew out of Jewish practice. In my research I remember a source stating that in the early (pre-Gregory, I believe) Catholic church, many of the most popular chant melodies were actually written by Jews or taken directly from Jewish sources. I believe it was one of the Gregories (perhaps the "Gregorian chant" Gregory, or possibly another) who weeded out much of what was blatantly "Jewish" in source. At any rate, at least one source claimed that those chants which were obviously of Jewish composition were weeded out of the Catholic church repertoire by one of the popes. This is not to say that those of Jewish _style_ were removed, but only those which could clearly be traced to a Jewish (and therefore "heathen" to the pope) source.
