If some one comes and asks for stuff a the last moment when they've know for
a long time when its needed I think it says more about how they feel about
me than anything else. Its always struck me as showing a lack of respect.
Yes we are under authority but leaders are also called not to lord it over
the flock like the unsaved do. And yes the next time it happens I'll get on
and do it but I'll point out that they could've let me have this stuff
earlier.

I can't help but notice that the responses to this request very much seem to
reflect what is viewed as "normal" in each person's particular church. It
might also reflect whether each church is the type that does extensive
practising of parts, etc... or if the church is one that does less of that.
It stands to reason that a church that expects an extremely high-quality of
music and perfection in vocal parts, etc... should allow more time to
prepare, than a church that does not expect that.
Personally... I have no problem pulling a song out of the blue last minute,
but our congregation does not expect anything more than music to sing along
to, and a leader that does his/her best to follow the Spirit's leading. The
last church that I was in, however, practiced for 4-6 hours for each
service, and each singer had to memorize exact vocal parts for each song,
etc. It would be completely unreasonable to expect that particular team to
sing at the same quality that they usually did on a last-minute request. I
really do think that most pastors are aware of their team's standards, and
will usually be sensitive to that.
Finally... I don't think Steve had any idea that his request would cause
such a lengthy thread! I took his post as though he was fine with the last
minute request, didn't think much of it, just was asking for help finding
the songs. :-) I nearly did the same last week. (But that doesn't mean that
this discussion hasn't been a good one for us to have, since it has raised
some very valid points.)
