Bruce,
last year, I went from a big full band to a small, half full, sometimes only
4 people:

I missed the big sound for a while, going to only an acoustic guitar and one
electric from a full team, but when I learned bass and an excellent drummer
came, and then an excellent keyboard player all in one year, it got much
better.
I would rather be needed on a small half full team than on a team where
there are so many good musicians they don't really need me there.

That is also my feeling that I get more enjoyment out of using my gifts to
fill a specific need than to have to compete with someone else for a slot.

Also, I grew to love the smaller sound. I was listening to old tapes of the
team that was so big, and it was so noisy. I had to turn them off, I
remember, opera singers blaring out, vibrato and all, electric guitar
banging away. I have gotten used to a sound that is more like you would
hear on a recording where every sound can be picked out.

It wasn't all about size, it has a lot to do with the personality and
skills of the leader and group, but just my input for what it's worth.

Patti
